Nothing’s worse than spending all morning painstakingly applying makeup to your face only to look in the mirror five hours later and find that it’s melted off! Instead of carrying around all your favorite products to constantly reapply, consider investing in a finishing product. (There were lots of good samples in Sephora’s It Kit #3!)

How do these products work? They come in liquid sprays or powders and are designed to minimize oil production and keep your makeup from straying. There are lots of types on the market by almost every major brand, which means there’s a lot to sort through. Use this helpful guide to learn more about setting sprays and powders.

Sprays

Setting sprays may seem counterproductive, as you’re essentially misting liquid all over your face after finally getting the perfect touches, but it really works! Typically, you should spray two to four times on your bare face, and then two to four times after applying makeup. It might feel funny while your face is wet, but once the liquid dries, you’ve got a look that will last all day and (hopefully!) well into the night.

I really like Urban Decay’s De-Slick Oil Control Setting Spray because it promises to keep oil from bubbling up to the surface. If you’ve got combination or oily skin, this product will be your savior. Good bye, blotting! Urban Decay also has an all-night spray that promises to last over 16 hours, so if you plan to stay out late, you might prefer that one.

Powders

If the idea of getting your face all wet is just too crazy for you to get over, you can get the same effect from setting powders. They work just like you would use any other powder; simply brush powder on with a fan brush over your completed look and blend as appropriate. These powders promise a weightless, polished look.

If you’re on the market for a setting powder, try Laura Mercier Setting Powder. It’s a loose powder that works well over liquid foundation, and the nifty sifter packaging makes it easy to get just the right amount of product out. Plus, it blends well and doesn’t leave your face chalky or powdery.
